A simple definition of mercy is undeserved kindness. God’s mercy toward us is seen as divine kindness, holy compassion that never runs out or changes with our wavering heart. It is within God’s power to exact judgment on sinners; the reality is that God’s wrath poured out on us would be just.
For the sinner, justice is death (Romans 6:23). Were it not for the holy and divine mercy of God, we would not have the gift of salvation. In His mercy, He took on Himself something that was rightfully ours to bear - separation from God the Father. We did not deserve His sacrifice, but He gave freely and willingly from a heart filled with mercy.
Romans 9:15-16 says, “I will show mercy to whom I show mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion. So then it does not depend on human will or effort, but on God who shows mercy.”
Thank God that we do not have to meet a certain standard to receive divine mercy. What a wonderful gift! So why is it so difficult for us to extend mercy to those who have wronged us?
As Ephesians 4:22-24 tells us to put off bitterness and an unforgiving heart. Renew your mind with the truth of His mercy. Put on kindness, forgiveness, and a merciful spirit. We exemplify the holiness of God each time we choose to treat someone with undeserved kindness. I am sure that we have all come across that person who is simply hard to love. Purpose now to show them the mercy that God has shown you.
