Caring for Orphans

“The deepest and strongest foundation for adoption is located not in the act of humans adopting humans, but in God adopting humans. And this act is not part of His ordinary providence in the world; it is at the heart of the Gospel.” -John Piper

Why Orphan Care

Little GirlThe Bible is clear that caring for orphans is not reserved to a select few, but rather every Christ follower is called to love the orphan in some capacity. It’s the realization that we were once fatherless but were rescued by a compassionate God and adopted into His family.

  • It is estimated that there are 143 million orphans worldwide (recent UNICEF report). However, the UNICEF numbers don’t include abandonment (millions of children) as well as sold and/or trafficked children.
  • Approximately 26,000 to 30,000 children under the age of 5 living in extreme poverty die each day.
  • Child-headed households are becoming more common as potential guardians succumb to AIDS or other causes of death.

The Solution

Uganda OrphansThe church of Jesus Christ is the most powerful force in the world. Understanding that the life of the church is the heart of God, and that the heart of God is to serve a broken world – we believe that Jesus has commanded the Church to be the solution.

“Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” – James 1:27

Currently, Long Hollow is actively involved in caring for vulnerable children in Haiti, Uganda, and India. Our goal is to display the love of Christ to each child by not only meeting their immediate physical needs, but also by pouring into them spiritually and preparing them for successful lives once they leave the orphanage. It is through these relationships that we have the privilege of sending hundreds of people on mission each year through VBS, medical, and construction trips.

Questions and Answers

Who are our orphan care partners and how many children are at each orphanage?

In Haiti, we partner with an organization called El Shadai Ministries International. ESMI’s mission is to raise up Haitian church leaders who are passionate about seeing the people of Haiti transformed by the Gospel. Located in one of the most impoverished nations in the world, our orphanage in Jeremie is home to approximately 140 children.

In Uganda and India we partner with the Global Orphan Project. Our orphanage in Uganda is home to approximately 85 children that range in ages 7-14. Along with the local pastor, there are two missionary families that live on site that help minister to the children and the surrounding community.

Located in the slums of Hyderabad, the orphanage in India serves as a safe place for children living with HIV. In addition to being a refuge for these once forgotten children, there is also a church, a school, and a job-training center on site.

How does my financial support directly impact the children’s lives?

It is through your generosity and obedience that every child is provided shelter, two meals per day, safe drinking water, and an education. Your support also provides medical supplies, salaries for teachers and house “mamas,” maintenance supplies to keep the orphanage up to date, and security to ensure the children remain safe.

However, it is impossible to see the full extent of your obedience. Through these tangible acts of kindness, every child is learning about the love of Jesus Christ, some are going to college, and others are leaving the orphanage with a sense of responsibility to further carry out the Great Commission.

How can I get involved?

Prayer – Pray that the Lord would give you a personal sense of responsibility in regard to caring for the orphan. Pray that our church would continue to live out Proverbs 31:8 when it says, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.” Pray for our mission teams and that God would use them mightily as they serve as the hands and feet of Jesus. Pray that the children in our orphanages as well as the millions of other orphans around the globe would come to know their Heavenly Father.

Go – Long Hollow sends hundreds of people each year on mission to get involved in what God is doing around the world. We would love for you to witness firsthand what life in Haiti, Uganda, and India is like for these amazing children.

Give – Orphan care is engrained in Long Hollow’s culture. Every time someone gives to the church, a portion of that offering supports all the various ministries at Long Hollow, including orphan care. However, if you want to give specifically to our orphan care ministry which will allow us to do more, please reach out to chelsea.thompson@longhollow.com.
